Investigating the Menu: Hibachi Time

I'm a big fan of food trucks. Is it inconvenient to shout over the motor? Sure. Have I gotten a nasty sunburn waiting for my food before? Yes, but that's on me for having Irish heritage and not wearing sunscreen. Overpriced sometimes? No regular quesadilla should be anywhere near 15 dollars. Have I gotten violently ill from one truck in town that I will not name? You bet! (I genuinely started drafting my will, it got so bad.)

If you ignore all that, the food is pretty good.

There's a good amount of food trucks running around Dubuque. Tracking them is pretty simple if you have a Facebook account. Tons of groups out there to track them down. Usually, trucks post their schedule in the groups on Mondays, which is very convenient.

There are two staples in town, Hangry Hobo and Hibachi Time. Today we'll be tackling Hibachi Time, purely because for some reason they're always in very convenient proximity to me. Kinda suspicious if you ask me. It could also be because they're one of the few trucks in town with two vehicles. I think they're trying to drain the money from my wallet. (Kidding)

In all my years living in Dubuque, I've never had any issues with Hibachi Time. Whenever I pass by it, I always think about that yum yum sauce. I think I need to be hooked up to an IV full of that stuff. If you haven't tried it, you should give it a shot, it's stellar. There's a lot of places that sell it but it's never as good as Hibachi Time. Perfect dipping sauce for honestly everything. It's a creamy sauce that has a nice flavor that you don't get with other sauces.

They've got a fair assortment of options on the menu. Nothing huge but it doesn't need to be. Egg rolls, crab rangoons, and even funnel cake fries that I sadly haven't had a chance to try yet. Of course the star of the show is their hibachi.

Each option had a different protein, including a veggie option if that's your jam. My jam is their teriyaki steak option. Let me tell you, dear readers, teriyaki steak is one of the top 10 flavors in the world, right behind chicken korma and my mothers generational meatloaf recipe. Subway had a teriyaki steak option and when they took it away I stopped going to Subway. Love that stuff.

At Hibachi Time, their teriyaki steak hibachi is wonderful. Long strips of steak on a bed of immaculate rice? I'm already slamming my card on the square card reader thingy. I like to drizzle the yum yum sauce on top but, either way, the stuff is delicious. It all balances together super well.

Their cheapest hibachi option is a teriyaki chicken, which is also pretty good. At $12 it's pretty worth your money, they give you a pretty good portion.

Teriyaki Chicken Hibachi

It's hard to go wrong with any option. Sometimes I just get their rice and extra yum yum sauce and chow down. It's easy to see how they've become such a staple. Not to mention how they seem to always be around nearby.

Customer service is always pretty solid too. Never got my order messed up and it's a reasonable wait time. I also like that when you order, they hand you a pager. I think every food truck experience could benefit from a pager system. When it's busy, food trucks are kinda awful. The vauge suggestion of a line, the staff having to shout the order over the caucauphanous generator, and not to mention the wait times. Pagers just streamline the whole process.

FINAL THOUGHTS

I don't think Hibachi Time is going anywhere anytime soon. Their menu is solid, prices are reasonable, and that yum yum sauce needs to be bottled and sold everywhere. The truck is a staple and there's not even that much I'd change about it. To Hibachi Time, if you are reading this and ever decide to bottle the yum yum sauce, send me one. I'll write about it.

RATING:
Availability: 10/10
Service: 10/10
Price: 8/10
Food: 9/10
Menu: 8/10
FINAL RATING: 9/10

For this rating, due to it being a food truck and the the lack of drink options (aside from water), two categories have been swapped for Availability and Menu. Felt more fair.
