Second Bite: Rose & Berries Café

Rose & Berries might just be one of the most beautiful restaurants in DBQ. Every part of the interior is thought out and gorgeous. Their website alone is fun to look at. They've got such a solid brand image, with the pastels and the flowers, it's truly a gift for the eyes. It's the perfect place to dress up nice and sit down with friends for a great experience.

I'd only been to Rose & Berries once before, around when it just opened. I had an amazing mango smoothie in an adorable pineapple glass and chatted with some friends over drinks. I brought home some macaroons and realized that those aren't really for me and gave the rest to a friend. I had went around noon on a Sunday (mistake on my part considering how close they are to a church) so it was pretty crowded but we still managed to find a table. Overall pretty good experience, but I could tell I hadn't gotten the full picture yet. I needed to go back.

Rose & Berries recently celebrated their one year anniversary, so I figured it'd be the best time to come back. This time not on a Sunday after church.

Looking at the beautiful menu online, I still love the selection. From butter chicken to macrons, there's a sizable range of things to get. Everything it pretty reasonably priced considering the size of their staff, all the offerings, and the fact they recently opened up for Doordash orders.

When I went there, it was right as they opened so it wasn't too crowded. It'd been a while since I was there so I got a little confused with the seating. I had missed the (honestly pretty small) sticker on the table that told you which table number you were at and had a QR code that let you order. I just went up to the register and got confused when the very nice lady asked which table number I was at. We worked it out and here's what I ordered and how they tasted:

  • PB&J Toast Slices
    • Rating: 9/10
    • A fresh piece of homemade bread sliced into strips and covered in peanut butter and jelly. I was actually pretty impressed with this one. I was surprised that something on the kids menu could be this good. It had the perfect ratio of PB to J that made it melt in your mouth. The jelly felt very homemade as well. It was fairly messy, seeing as it's an open faced type of PB&J configuration, so be warned if ordering it for a kid.
  • Tropical Recovery Smoothie
    • Rating: 10/10
    • A tropical blend of fruits like pineapple and mango. I love nothing more than mango, I've eaten a fair share of them over the sink on some bad days and I would say they recovered me. Nice and creamy, like a mix of a mango lassi and a regular smoothie. No notes, love the pineapple glass it comes in.
  • Turkish Kebab Wrap
    • Rating: 4/10
    • It's their Turkish kebab but in a wrap with some veggies. Came with fries and a white sauce. I honestly thought I was gonna like this one more. I'm a lover of all things savory and meaty and I love some veggies thrown in the mix. Maybe it's because I got to it last, but there was a brown liquid that was probably dripping out of the meat. I say probably because I'm still not exactly certain. I eat a lot of different foods so liquid dripping out of a wrap is no stranger to me. However, it was really sticky and when I went to lick some off my hands, it tasted super sour. The veggies were a bit slimy in there as well so I wasn't a huge fan of that. I ended up not finishing it due to the sensory experience of the veggies combined with the sour liquid. The meat was great though, no sour taste from it at all, which still confuses me. The white sauce that came with it was also a little sour so I'm not really sure what the flavor profile is supposed to be. Pretty good sauce if you dip it in the fries, though. Would make a pretty good dressing for a salad, in my opinion.
  • Chicken Tenders
    • Rating: 10/10
    • Honestly surprised me with how good these were. Our household gets a lot of chicken strips because my partner is a picky eater and chicken strips are great for picky eaters. Sometimes he won't eat certain types of tenders because of the breading or the texture of the chicken, but he devoured these. I got a bite in before they were gone and they were great! Perfectly crispy breading and pretty good chicken.
  • Nutella Crepe
    •  Rating: 9/10
    • We had asked for it to have just nutella in it and they were able to substitute it out easily which is very nice. When it got to our table, I had a bite even though I'm not a huge fan of crepes. It was pretty great. The crepe was soft and warm and the nutella was nice and melted. I don't think crepes hold for very long because it got cold by time we finished the rest of our food. Not Rose & Berries fault obviously. Next time I'm there I'll ask for one with strawberries and whip just to try it out.
Most of the dishes came with fries and they were amazing. Somehow fluffy and crispy at the same time. The crunch was super satisfying, almost like a chip. We couldn't stop eating them, they were so good. All our food came out fairly fast considering how much we ordered. The smoothie came out so fast, I didn't have time to jot any notes down. Overall a pretty good food experience. Still not sure what happened with that wrap, maybe I just got a bad one? Maybe it's just not for me? Next time I'll try the regular kebab and get back to you, dear readers.

The Turkish Kebab Wrap (It looked so good!)

Chicken Tenders (Beautiful presentation, by the way)

PB&J Sticks

The Tropical Recovery Smoothie!

Service was incredible, everyone was very nice and they were able to substitute easily. I do wish the numbers at the table were bigger and there was something showing where you could drop off the plates. It took me a bit to find it. Some people were leaving plates at the tables so it wasn't just us.

The place is still absolutely gorgeous and they have been doing a lot of events recently. I've been trying to grab a reservation for one of their tea parties, but haven't had any luck yet with figuring out schedules with me and my friends.

Final Thoughts:

I am so glad Rose & Berries is still around. They seem to be doing amazing as of late and we needed something cool like this. Something fun that you'd think would only be in a bigger city like CR or DSM. Their food is nice and their bakery always looks incredible. I'm glad there's places in DBQ doing something different. I can't wait to see what Rose & Berries has in store next!
